Road Trip

Three days ago, we became officially unemployed. Heather finished her residency at the Mayo Clinic(YAY!) and Mark resigned from the Wabasha Clinic. We have two months off before Heather starts her job at the University of Iowa, so we’re taking a Road Trip.

We set out yesterday morning, with a trunkload of suitcases and Ranger in the back seat. We traveled from Rochester to Bentonville and stayed with Audrey and Tracy. They took us out to eat at Abuelo’s, one of our long-time favorite Mexican restaurants. We spent one night with them, which wasn't enough time.

As we were driving we wondered where the North ends and the South begins. The answer: somewhere in Missouri. The temperature increased with each passing mile, and we noticed small roadside churches popping up more frequently. There were both larger and smaller dwellings as we traveled south, large ranch homes and small, shabby mobile homes.

As we traveled from the Upper Midwest to the South, the corn appeared to grow exponentially as we drove south. In Minnesota, the corn fields were full of six-inch-tall seedlings and grew to six-foot-tall, dry stalks by the time we arrived in Texas.
